The Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program (IEMBP) is a minimum 9-month orientation program designed to support IEMs in becoming registered for practice in British Columbia.
Applicants must have completed a recognized midwifery education program, or be assessed on significant midwifery experience if their education cannot be verified or approved. Only those who have completed a midwifery education program can apply to the IEMBP. Medical professionals, regardless of experience, are not eligible for this program.
Because seats in the program are limited, applicants are evaluated through an assessment and interview process, with offers made based on the program’s mission to enhance both experience and diversity. Seats cannot be deferred to a later year, although a waitlist is maintained.
The IEMBP prepares participants to take the Canadian Midwifery Registration Exam (CMRE), which, once passed, allows them to apply for registration as a midwife with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
